He worked in Rembrandt’s Amsterdam workshop after he had had professional training with an unknown painter in Dordrecht. His earliest works are religious scenes with something of Rembrandt’s spiritual emotion. Nicolaes Maes built his reputation as a genre and portrait painter, known for his delicate handling of interiors and the interaction between his subjects. Maes innovatively painted domestic settings as a suite of rooms, rather than the three walls of a single space—a formal choice that would influence the works of artists like Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch . Nicolaes Maes initiated his artistic studies in his native city and completed his training in Rembrandt’s studio where he worked from the late 1640s until 1653. From his early years as an independent master up to the 1660s he focused on interior scenes.

1656. Medium: Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 17 3/4 x 20 3/4 in. Nicolaes Maes (b. 1634, Dordrecht, d. 1693, Amsterdam). In about 1648 Nicolaes Maes became a pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam, staying there until 1654  Maes underwent some initial artistic training in his native Dordrecht.
